THE RAHUI FACTORY.

TO BE PURCHASED BY CITY COUNCIL. Ihe following recommendations of the Milk Committee were adopted by the City Council last night:—‘' (lj That authority be granted for the erection of a dwelling at Rahui factory for the factory foreman, at an estimated cost of £750. and that mess and sleeping accommodation be provided tor the employees at an estimated cost of £sOll. (2) That accounts amounting to £1i>,340 Os 8d be passed for payment.” The committee reported that they had considered the petition which the nearby farmers were presenting to Parliament, praying that certain amendments by made to the Wellington CityMilk Supply Act, 1010, and that they wore taking steps to oppose the prayer of the petition, and intended lodging

a counter-petition setting forth the council’s views with regard to state

ments made in the farmers’ petition. The committee had already asked -Mr A. Gray, K.C.. to appear on the council's behalf.

: In view of statements that doctors j and hospitals would not take the milk j department’s milk. Councillor Norwood ' stated that he had received a report which showed that 12 doctors and 2* ! hospitals were taking their milk. With i regard to the Wellington Hospital, Councillor Norwood said that the board had a contract with Mr .Strand, who was a very excellent farmer, and they were in good hands. That being and ia view of the fact that the board was an independent body, they had not thought it advisable to intervene at all. This was entirely a different state of the ease to the one certain people were endeavouring to make out. The following report of the milk department was adopted (iu committee) : ‘‘(1) That the resignation of the superintending engineer of the milk department be accepted as from Sep tember 30, and that a bonus equivalent to three months’ salary be granted to him. aud also payment of salary in lieu of any leave of absence that may be now due to him. ‘‘(2) That the city milk inspector let placed under the control of the milk department, in lieu of being under the city engineer's department, as at present, and that, the milk department be responsible for the whole of hisalary; also that tut increase of £sl

| per annum be granted to Mr RawliaIson. An intimation has been received from the Department of Public Health ■ that they will not be able to continue half-payment of the officer’s salary u% heretofore. ‘‘(3) That the acting manager of the Rahui factory be given one mouth's notice terminating his engagement, that applications bo called for a factory foreman at n salary of 26 per week and free quarters, that Mr Patterson he appointed to supervise Kabul factory in conjunction with the prr-o-il duties being carried out by him, rind that an increase in salary of £SO he granted to him in consideration of such increased duties. ‘‘(4) That authority be granted to purchase the Rahui factory on terms and conditions set out in the unexpired lease, and that official notice of intention of same be given to the directors of the company.” At a meeting of the executive of the Island Bay Ratepayer?’ Association last night, a resolution was unanimously passed in support of the conditions no 7 governing the milk supply to the City Council.
