DIPHTHERIA PREVALENT
CAmUEIIS FOUND IN SCHOOLS"As tins diseas* is increasing in numbers .though fortunately, not in uiulcncc, all over New Zealand, I think some clelinite steps should be taken," said Bir -James Wilson, chairman ol the Palmerston Hospital Board ul a meeting of that body yesterday. He stated that recently the bacteriologist visited tiie FeiJding school, and swabbed tlie throats ol -100 children, in order to ascertain il diphtheria/ was in evidence. The result was Unit to children were found to be Carriers of the complaint. It was a very serious matter. Diphtheria cases were always in tiie hospital by the dozen. The diphtheria wing was newer empty. There were seven in at the moment, and iliere were a dozen die other day. These children at tiie Feilding school were not sullcnng lroni diphtheria, but they were carrying the disease. It was just a question of what should be done, but lie thought ttie Board should ask that the same procedure be taken in Palmerston North at the schools whenever there was an outbreak. Mr llornbiow thought the Department ol Ileal*!! should be requested to send a bacteriologist, to ail ' the schools in tiie. district whenever and wherever there might be an outbreak. The motion was earned.
