BACILLUS OF TOOTACHE
That doonv of tooth, which is a widespread and almost universal disease, is produced by two typos of bacteria appears to have been proved by certain experiments, of which a full account is given in the London Lancet by Professor Mclntosh, Dr. W. Warwick •Tones, and Mr l*. La/.a rus-Barlow. The bacteria produce acid which attacks the enamel of the tooth, destroying the lime in it, after the teeth begin to decay from the enamel inwards. The process was studied by steeping teetli in acid broths into which the various bacteria in the mouth were introduced, and noting the (‘fleets. Some of the bacteria in the mouth will not live iu acid sudicient ly strong to attack the teeth, but finally two distinct bacteria which had the necessary faculty of living, and which attacked the teeth were isolated. Results similar to those observed in toothache and in decayed teeth were thus produced. The bacteria have been named Bacilus ncidro* philus odontolytieus Type 1 and 11.
