THE OTAKI ELECTORATE

FIRST SHOT FIRED AT OHAU,

MR HARKNESS'S OPENING ADDRESS. The first shot in the election campaign of 102L' was tired at Ohau on Wednesday by Mr (J. I- Harkness. the In dependent candidate for the Otaki scat. There was a fairly good attendance of electors from Ohau, Kuku and surrounding districts and the candidate received a patient and attentive hearing in his maiden effort. •'The dairy industry is our greatest industry'' said Mr Harknees. He thought, however, it was capable of great expansion. One way was to make production even throughout the year instead of for a period of about seven mouths as was done jus! now. There was no reason why that could nor be done, and maintained that it would secure a better level of prices •and stimulate the industry and return ;.. much larger income to the country. Mr Harkness had a word to say about the railways, and incidentally the courtesy and want of courtesy of the officials connected with this and other Government services. There were exceptions, however. The people of Ohau had no reason for complaint, for in their railway and postal officers they were exceptionally well served with a courtesy and attention that made it a pleasure to do business with these offices. Long and loud applause followed this remark.
