STUDENT MOVEMENT.
CAMP AT WAIKANAE. The New Zealand Christian student movement is at present holding a camp at Mahara House, Waikanac, for the girls of the secondary schools of the University district of Wellington. The -Student movement was first founded in N.Z. in 1897, 25 years ago, on the visit of Dr. J. R. Mott, of America. The four University Colleges and many of our secondary schools have become affiliated to the movement and have their Christian Unions. The N.Z. movement is one of 20 such movements which are united in the world student federation. In 19 other countries small movements, which have begun recently, are preparing for affiliation. The Federation is international and in-ter-demoninational, including members of every creed and nearly every- race. Christian unions, which compose the national movements, exist in 25,000 colleges and schools, and have a membership of over 200,000 students and professors. Miss Moncrieff, a graduate of Victoria College, a daughter of Mr James Moncrieff, Carterton, and a niece of Mr and Mrs IV. B. Smith. Otaki, represented New Zealand at the Vorld Federation Christian Student Movement Conference held at Pekin this year. Conferences are held in places of strategic importance every four years. They have been held at Constantinople, Oxford, Tokio and Lake Mahonk, U.S.A. The Pekin Conference was the first international conference ( to be held in China. After the Pekin conference, Miss Moncrieff and other delegates, representing five nations, travelled through Centra! China, taking the message of the Conference to four large and important student centres. China ’» great renaissance movement is causing Chinese students to search carefully their own civilisation and that of the west. They are determined to take only what is best from both. It is probable that in time a great civilisation will arise among this peaceloving people which will lead humanity. Following the example of the Universities of the older world, the Student Movement of the University of New Zealand has at last opened a campaign to raise funds for the relief of students in Central Europe and Russia. The University Senato decided to give its support, and a strong and representative committee was set up. Miss Graham, M.A., Student Movement secretary for the secondary schools, in order to raise funds, has been on an ori ganising tour throughout the schools and University Colleges of New Zealand. Unless enough money can be sent quickly, thousands of students of the unfortunate countries of Centra! Europe and Russia must die. These students are urgently needed to rebuild their ruined countries. Miss Graham is Xt present in camp with the schoolgirls at Waikanae.
