♦ In the hope of being able to effect a. saving of well over £SOOO in ore item of expenditure alone—that of digging holes—the Manawatu-Oroua Power - Board has instructed its engineer. Mr . Waters to proceed to Invercargill to , inspect a post hole-digging and erecting machine, and investigate it- possibilities on the spot. According to infor- • -nation already in possession of the board, the machine will dig a oft. post hole, hoist, tip a 35ft. ironbark pole, drop it into the ho!*, move 2; chair.?.. i and Commence digging the next hole, ail in the space of cigdit. lairitrte.-. The Southland Power Board has an outfit in operation, and the results bore- out the forgoing- cialm, The Oroua Power Board has estimated tfee cost for hard labour at lis 6d per bole, whereas it is claimed that the machine cuts the cost dowr. to 3.-. 6d per hole.
