FIRE AT PAEKAKARIKI.

MOTOR-LORRY DESTROYED. A motor-lorry, containing a load of benzine, was totally destroyed by fire on tho Paekakariki Hill at about 3.30 ' yesterday afternoon. It was journeying from Wellington to Palmcrston whon tho firo suddenly burst out, and ._ in a few seconds the flames leaped to a t height of some 20 feet. Tho telegraph t lines for a whole length were destroyed, - but luckily the construction gang from , Otaki were adjacent and quickly ef- , footed temporary repairs. To-day permanent repairs were carried out. It is thought that the fire was caused through benzine coming into contact with a hot pipe. I
