GOLF.

J.l was rather warm for golf on Saturday, nevertheless over fifty players mustered on the links. The ladies' competition—a medal handicap—-re-sulted in a tie between Miss Quill and Mrs Sharp, both 76 nett. The latter player is improving her game steadily and should soon reduce her handicap considerably. The men's August medal was won , by J. B. D'Ath, 34-15-63. This player! has come on a lot lately, and is now perhaps the steadiest player with his wooden clubs on the links. He has an excellent chance of getting into the j final of the championship if he pays more attention to his short game. J The preliminary rounds of the open ! championship at Home v. ere played on the Prince'-s links. This is the longest course in the world. 6850 yards. Hutchison did a "1, a record for the course, playing the 17th hole 539 yards. Hngen was on the greet! in two splendid drives. The orthodox length for a course is now 0000 yards. As the Otaki link? are only 5300 yards a considerable ad dition will have to be added to some of tin' holes to bring them to the necessary length. The following verses should appeal to all golfers, and it would be a great thing for the links if all golfers would keep the last line in their mind.-, j Stance, stance, stance, the hall addres sing, Never let your noddle move at all; | If you'd drive both tar and high, j 8.-atieg bogey by-nnd-bye. You must always keep your eye upon the ball: j You may sometimes forget to watch the 1 ' ball, ! Forget when you-rc driving it "fore" to call, | Forget, in a bunker, no club to ground, j Forget on a green no remark to sound, j Forget to be always polite as you can. i And even forget you're a gentleman. j Forget that you caddie's no grovelling 1 serf. I But never forget to replace th< turf!
