DEATH OF LORD NORTHCLIFFE.
PASSES PEACEFULLY AFTER STRENUOUS LIFE.
: London, August 14. Lord Northcliffe is dead. I London, August 14. Lord Northcliffe had a peaceful death. There will be a funeral service in the Abbey on Thursday, and afterwards the body will be buried at St. Marylebone Cemetery, Finchley.
.Alfred C. Harmsworth, first discount Northcliffe, one ol the moot striking figures in newspaperdom, who has been styled the "Napoleon of Journal--1 ism," was born Juty 15,. 1865, in Ire--1 land. He was the eldest son of ihe ; late Alfred Harmsworth, barrister, and married in 1888. In ihe same year lie started the periodical "Answers," in conjunction with his brother, GeciJ Harmsworth, now M.P. This venture ! was highly successful, and in 18',)5 they •' purchased the Evening News, ui which j they soon made a saleable property. I In 18U6 he started the Daily Mail, the pioneer newspaper of modern journalism, and conducted it with a vigour that soon gave it a daily circulation of over 1,000,000 copies. Lord Northcliffe, by reason of his well-advertised business ability, became a prominent figure during the fate war, and as director of propaganda rendered much valuable service to the Allied cause. His recent attacks on Mr Lloyd George, after he had "shepherded" ttie British Premier for so many years, attracted world-wide attention. One of his later ventures was to acquire the London Times. He received his baronetcy in 1904, in the year following was elevated to the peerage, and in 1017 was created a Viscount. His recent flying visa to New Zealand, while on a tour of the East, will be remembered.
