Ui' the steel pipes 'Submitted the Council has really three to choose from, though nine linns have tendered; viz.; -U •Spiral Pipe Company; (2) Mannesman Tube (British); Co) Stewart & Lloyd' <, British). Spiral J/ipe; The tender price iiom this linn is higher than the others. The pipes would be made locally, but the littings would be made in Lugland. Under the circumstances 1 cannot re--1 commend the Council to accept this | linn’s tender. Mannesman Tube: The price per loot | ( whilst lower than the Spiral) is liighei I than Mo. 3. They are, however, made in lengths varying from 30 lu Oo feel lung. The joint is a particularly positive one, whilst the insistence to water is reduced to a minimum, and the i Council need have no doubt about tile j pipes being coated inside with a be- = luminous compound. The thickness ol j steel increases with size of pipe; this j is important when making connection. ; . iStewart & Lloyds: This is a particularly good pipe, and has the advantages of a sound joint. The resistance t° "*a- , ter is also reduced to a minimum, and the inside ns well ns out side is thoroughly coated with a beiuminous compound. The lengths arc, however, shorter than the Mannesman Tube (viz., 20 feet against bO feet), whilst iho metal is not so thick. The fact that they arc lap-welded does not lend themselves so readily to laying on a curve j with a large radius as a solid drawn ] tube would. j The lowest tender for Stewart and j I.luvd’s pipe- is Messrs Thomas Ballinger and Co. Messrs A. ami J\ Burt :d>o tender these pipes inn ask that the fittings required be mad-* in Dunedin, though they give n juice for Brit ish goods. My recommendation to Council ithat the order for pipes be placed with M<■ s<r.- Duthie and Co., as repr>"'e:ita rives of the British Mannesman Tub* Co., and that the ruder for fitting- ami meter be placed with Messrs A. and f Burt, of Dunedfrj, the later good- <"*■>:• (dialing meters) to be of X- •• Zealand mu nufacture.
