FOOTBALL.
"THE VETERANS." Heard on main street, Mnnakuu. last night:—"There will be every chance of selecting a team named the "Veteran" football team to play a match in the near future, probably on the Manakau ground, the proceeds to go toward* the botanical gardens." "Oo on. and who would they select.'" "Well, there are quite a number." "i'or instance take: —Full back. Vcrry; three-quart-ers, 11. Andrew, M. Burke, J. Blair; live-eighths, H. O'Donuell, J. O'Connor.: half, A. Wnl.-haw ; forwards, P. \V. lngv. F. Burned: lock, Hick Bryant; Richard Robinson, P. A. D. Mickle, lom Loiteh, Ben Gray; wing forward, j'heo Clifford. Emergencies: (backs), VV. Xevvson, W. Dalzcll, J. Keats and C. Richard; (forwards), Robt. Bcvan, J. Staples. J. Boultoii and John Atkins; coach. Rangi; referee. Major Tatum."
"Well Jack, 1 think you arc right, and 1 am of the opinion that 1 have heard the names you have mentioned before." "Oh., yes. they have the reputation, and what's more, combination is a great part to be considered. Xon look, take Vcrry as full back—a good stayer, and a top-notcher on the leather. The three-quarters are also faultless; with Andrew and Blair on each wing they should lose almost anyone.''' "Why?" "Well, cutting in "man," can't you think.' And there's Burke al centre, who is no doubt willing and may. add to the score by his great footwork.'-'
"Yes, go on." "Well, there's the half-back who is nippy, and if fed well by the pack should bring the game to a successful endiug.'' "But you forget the most important!" "What,"' "The live-eighths! What belter combination could you get.' Why they say it's combination that's needed; well, there you are. the vfctory i» a foregone conclusion. Now take Leitch and Gray tit flic back of the scrum. Yes. they are both hard strikers and will act as a vice al tit.a-- of stress,
ami with a little coach building (eoatsh I mean) should carry everything bet ore them. With Mickle ami Clifford together a great turn of speed should be witnessed. Good night Bill." "Good night Jack." Amalgamation Scheme.
