Petty thieving has also been rite at the railway end of the town. ; Mr T. W. Garth, who has taken over the Railway Hotel. Kilsbv and Mr Davies (town clerk) paid a visit of inspection to tiie water-works at the ueek-end, and found the work progressing satisfactorily. It is expected that excavations for the tank will be finished within a fortnight, after which a start will be made with excavations for the concrete pipe line and construction of intake wells. The owners of 421$ acres comprising part of the Moutoa Estate between Foxton and Shannon, have requested the Government to take over the laud at £90,000, the valuation placed on the land by the owners. The Government valuation is £112,000 and "hen an objection was recently made in tin* Assessment Court the valuation was sustained. A sale of produce, etc., was held at the theatre sample-rooms on Friday to raise funds for the Otaki library, and good business was done, over £lO being realised. Mrs tiwabey and her assistants —Mrs Davies. Mrs McDonald, Mrs Cook, and .Miss Xorgrove—deserve much credit for the success of the affair. A letter was read at the last meeting of the Palmerston North Hospital Hoard from Sister L. T. Lewis, of Otaki. on behalf of the children of Otaki and district, applying for the return of the ambulance forwarded to the board by Otaki.- —It was stated ihat the writer had been informed that the board would be glad to scad the ambulance back, hut it must have a receipt from some jcspousible person, and that no authority at that, time existed. —It was decided to communicate with the Mayor of Otaki, asking for an expression of opinion in regard to the matter. Members of the Otaki Choral Society held a wind-upsocial on Friday evening and spent a very pleasant time, i Se»eial line items were given, while j during the evening a very hearty vote of thanks was accorded the Wellington , Society for making the recent t rip to I the City »o enjoyable. The balance- 1 sheet in connection with the concert was submitted by Mr Davies <secretary i and considered very satisfactory. On the motion of Mrs Stable a hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs Lowry who so ably assi-ted during tile season by playing accompaniments. The work of cleaning the cemetery at Tainui is nearing its end; the pines surrounding having all been felled and 1 cut into firewood and posts. The Waterside Workers* band intend viMting Otaki about September next when they will render a piogramme of selections at the Sanatorium ground'* l .
