TAKES OF BOARD. Tn taking leave of the Wellington Land Board, Mr McUlure said Ihe Diseharged .Soldiers' Settlement Ac! had so greatly increased the v.orfc as to change the Board into a body similar to the largest mercantile corporations in the Dominion. One hundred and fifteen estates, containing 84,408 acres, had been purchased fur £1,667,811, and £2, 820, 12(1 had been advanced for the purchase of farms and houses. In addition 58,540 acres of Crown lands had been selected by returned men and a I further sum of £01)2,1300 advanced to purchase stock, making a grand total . of £5,150.036, with 3820 ledger accounts, 2503 persons had been settled ' on the lund, besides 2400 soldiers, who were assisted to buy ami erect houses. •' The way the men had buckled to and ' improved their holdings, despite tho unpredecenled slump, augured well for. the country. They had reason to bo grateful to the staff of the Land and .Survey Department, many of whom were returned men themselves, for tiie care and attention they devoted to car- _ lying out the provisions of tho Act.
