FANCY DRESS BALL.
A SUCCESSFUL -FUNCTION. The fancy (ires* hall, held in the theatre on Monday night,*was one of the most brilliant functions held in j this district for many years, and great j credit is due to Mr A. F. Jauncey and his assistants for so ably catering ior the large gathering. The interior of the theatre presented a very pleasing appearance, the lighting effects being admirable, while long ribbon .streamers added to the gaiety of the scene. Prac- j tieallv every person downstairs wore a fancy dress, and aided by masks thenidentity was not known till late in the evening. Several of the ladies w ore very pretty dresses, many appeared m novel and* unique costumes, while the | men, not to be outdone, appeared in dresses that were much admired. The j large number of spectators, who were . accommodated in the dress circle, fully | enjoyed proceedings, and took much interest in the costumes. When it came to voting for the best dressed lady and gentleman all found their task a difficult one. Mr Wills announced during the evening that the voting had result- ; ed in favor of Miss Goldie Rikihana J (Cleopathra) and Mr W. Subritzky (Mexiean). Both costumes were very fine ones, and the decision was received with applause. Mrs ,T. McGill (Chieftainess) and Mr H. G. E. Stable (A Moorish Slave) were next in order of merit, and it was fully admitted that their costumes were much above the ordinary The Tahiwi orchestra supplied first-class music, the floor was well polished, while supper was available during the evening. The gathering will long be remembered as one or ■the best hold in Otaki, and it-is hoped before the season closes that another gnch function will be held-
