iThc Otaki Literary and Debating Club will hold another of its evenings > on Wednesday week, when the subject of the debate arranged will be: “That | the system of settling returned soldiers 1 on the land as adopted by the New Zea- I ■ land Government has been a failure.” 1 The mover will be Mr T. Collins, and • the opposer Mr C. l-\ Atinoro. Thieves were greatly in evidence at Otaki Railway on Saturday evening, and more than one resident lost his Sunday dinner. Mr W. H. Reynolds' safe was rifled of all its contents, in- • eluding two good joints, while Mr F. Burratt was similarly treated. Thieving has been carried on in this locality for some time, and several articles : have been missed. According to Air Eddy, postmaster. | ilie Otaki telephone exchange is obsolete. and it may be advisable to get an electric ringer. There is no room to enlarge the exchange, and it is probable that an automatic exchange will shortly be' stalled. This would cost about £7OO, while to make necessary additions to buildings, etc., would cost about £2OOO. The Bishop of Wellington conducted the service at the Anglican Church last night, when there was a large congregation. The singing was a feature, while the Bishop’s address was a particularly line one, he taking his text from Hebrews, _l2thoh., first and second verses, which dealth on Christian life, encouragement., and its necessary conditions. 1 7.1 v A If.
