OTAKI MAORI RACING CLUB.
The winter meeting in connection with the above Club opened on Saturday in fair weather, although the rain which fell the previous night was the means of making the course sticky at the back stretch, otherwise it was in fine order, reflecting credit on the caretaker, Mr List. Thanks to Mr J. Griffiths, who carried out the bulk of the secretarial work, assisted by Mr Ay re,. the arrangements were complete, and owners and trainers were loud in their praise of the attention bestowed upon them. The attendance was both large and representative, the trains from Wellington, Palmerston. and elsewhere being well crowded. The Otaki Bras.' Band was in attendance and rendered several inspiring selections. The lacing on the whole was \ engood, the lields were large, and there were many close finishes. meeting liie sum of £25,010 was put through the totalisator as against £22, S.lfi on Saturday. Although a drop of £217! the returns are considered very satisfactory. Demos paid the best price, and one local resident has much cause for rejoicing having netted £2OO over the win. Among the visitors to the meeting was Mr W. 11. Field, M.P. Mrs Mcßeath, who so geiierouslv gnvo a valuable cup for the la.-! .Line meeting, has offered another similar trophy, the condition.- being left with the popular president, Mr ilvn Ling.
