NATIVE GARDEN PARTY

A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. 1 The garden party, held yesterday to raise funds for a soldiers’ memorial, was a great success, the attendance being large while the weather was favorable. His Worship the Mayor (Air J. P. Brandon) in a happy speech, opened proceedings. He referred to the excellent work done by the Natives in the past, commended them for (heir present move, and wished them till success. Then the “busy bees” got to work, and the various stalls, etc., were freely pal ionised. The transformation of the grounds by the planting of lovely treeferns, nikau palms, cabbage trees, etc., was greatly appreciated. and the handiwork of the committee highly eulogised. Airs Suainson and Airs Wallace, who had clung'' of Ihe Maori stall, did good business, .Mrs To liana was at home among the vegetables, while All's Roiri was happy at the light refreshment stall. The Otaki Brass Band also enjoyed proceedings and enlivened matters with line selections. Tu the evening a dance was held, nud the Raukawa was packed with a happy gathering. The decorations were very effective, while the music, provided by the Tahhvi family, was all that I*o u 1 d be desired. During the evening refreshments wen’ disposed of. Tlie success of the affair is largely due to Mr Puku Kikihamt. Atr AVari Rei. and the active and capable secretary (Mr Rikihana t'arkeck). All, w ith aide assistants, worked most ea- I .ergetieally. They were supported in j tlieir efforts by Mrs Te Hana mid Airs I Taipua. while oilier ladies gave willing assistance. | To-day the “busy bees” are again at j work, and there is a line gathering. Alt j should-make a point of attending and thus help swell the funds for the proposed memorial.
