: l .THE ANNUAL MEETING. |. The annual meeting, ol' the : County Patriotic Assoeaitioii was held tin Wednesday aiternoon in Levin. The chairman (Mr P. W. Goldsmitli) presided, and tliere were aiso presun: Messrs. W. Ktlsby (Koputarua), Keen well and Watkley Levin), McLean and llowell (Papaparautnu), Murducli and Mrs T. F. Gibson (Shannon), Rtoiiards (lliakara), Plaster (R.S.A.), Galley (To iloroj, J. and A. McLeavey (Ohau), and J. H. Andrew (Manakau;. THE YEAR’S OPERATIONS. Tlie Management Committee's report tor tlie year ended March 3i, 1922, was as follows: The Management Committee met three times during the year, and the Executive Committee four times, the attendance being very satisfactory. The district is .to he congratulated upon the fact that the funds collected during the .war period are now available for-, the use oi our disabled soldiers and their dependents when necessity arises. It has been the policy of your committee to -saieguard the funds and to consider all applications for assistance upon their individual merits, although it is quite possible to make mistakes at times, and your 1 committee are of opinion that ah claims coming before them litilierm have been iairly met and dealt wan satisfactorily. At the lasi uuuual fmeeting your committee were authorised to utilise up to GOOD lot soldiers' loans during the ensuing year, and we have to report that, loans totalling £537 were granted during that time, it is a mutter lor- gratification llnu most of the men who have been assisted by loans have been enabled m meet their obligations in the past, and with tlie advance of the coming season and prospect ut belter day-, we can safely hope that the repayments will be maintained. The annual repayments fixed by soldiers loan agreements total £543. Although your committee have not experienced any great difficulty in collecting these, there is at the present time a sum oj £157 3/1 outstanding and overdue. This amount includes interest. During the year the privilege of free post- 1 age to patriotic -toeieiies was withdrawn by the Postal Department. The ] cost oi administration during tlie yeat lias been very low, less than 2 per cent ol the accumulated lands, ami j tlie work tuts been carried out in the < office ol tlie secretary, and we have . reasons to believe that the duties ot treasurer and secretary have been carried out in a satisfactory manner. \N e j would express our appreciation to tlie : officers oi tlie various Government Departments for courtesy and prompt attention to matters referred to them, which materially assists our work, aiso to kindred bodies .who have given lus information and guidance which, lias been very helpful. We extend appreciation also to tiie press for publi city given to the proceedings of tlie j various meetings. I | in putting the motion, the chair-' ' man said an especial feature of their | operations was the manner in which the soidiers were repaying their ad-
vances. We -were passing through strenuous times, but the society seem -ed to have assisted a very good type : of soldier. There was a small deficiency, but when tlie"depression lilted a little lie had no doubt all obligations would be- met. The motion was then put and carried. OFFICERS ELECTED. Andrew. | Mr Goldsmith was re-elected chuirI man by acclamation, members agreej ing ttmt they could not do better titan | make him head oi the Association for another year. The Management Committee was , authorised to advance up to "£SOO to soldiers on loan during the coming | year, as it became available, it was considered that it would be wise to keep a sufficient amount of funds liquid in order to relieve any cases of distress that might crop up in the munediate future. | Advice was received from Messrs. Bienkhorn and Ciere stating a town section donated to the Association in the early stages of the war by the McDonald Estate was being conveyed to tiie committee, it was situated at tbe corner of Essex and Salisbury Streets. —The Committee was uuumrised to deal with the'section and a vote of thanks to tbe trustees of the estate for the giftit was decided to make a loan of £SO to a soldier wito was bee-farming and did-not expect to get any reveuue mini September. Sir Koedwell moved that the Committee place on record its appreciation of ilie conscientious and efficient manner in which the secretary had carried out his duties. The Executive : knew how promptly and thoroughly i the secretary attended to the work d j Society, lie gave a great deal oi time * and attention to the Society's affairs, it and no trouble >. f as too much lor hint. The motion was carried by acclamation. Mr Walkley acknowledged Ihe cordial vote passed to him, and said lie was always glad to do what lie could in the cause oi the soldiers. Mr Walk- ’ ley referred to the young soldier fanners who were in difficulties, and said many of them needed the advice of experienced farmers, and he recommended members of the committee to give that advice. The meeting then adjourned.
