OTAKI BOROUGH COUNCIL.
j MONTHLY MEETING. The following reports were read at the last meeting of the Council: — Town Clerk's Report. Streets.—Pair progress has been made with the tar work, and a fewdays' more sunshine should complete the whole as laid down in last year's programme. The estimates required as per Works' Committee report will be ready for consideration at the special meeting of the Council on May 25th, specially called for the purpose of confirming resolution re By-laws. Domain. —following on the procedure of last year wc made a collection re football matches at the domaiu. Xo\r control has been handed over to the Horowhenua Rugby Union. Water-Works. —Specifications are now ready to call tenders re pipes and fittings for main line and reticulation throughout the Borough. Promises have been made, but so far loan moneys have not come to hand. The Council should therefore review the highest possible amount we may receive before letting further contracts. Since the last meeting of the Council Mr !Xieol, sent., has signified his intention to prevent the Council proceeding with the erection of the tank, until the procccdure us required by Public Works Act are carried out. This will not delay the final issue (though it is unfortunate on account of the large number of unemployed). The tank, however, will be iinished long before we are ready for it. —P. G. Da vies, Town Clerk. Foreman's Report. Tarring footpaths has been the principle work done during the month. All footpaths have been tarred on Kirk and Bell Streets and at the station end. Rangiuru and the state school are yet to be done, which will be finished next week if the weather is good. 1 have cleaned the culvert by Moutere House, and 1 have also taken the log out of the creek. Mr Pogden's crossing aud the crossing at Rangiuru House has been attended to, and a drain has been cut the full length section, the work being done by Mr Woods. I would like the Council to give me more metal for the. roads as they are getting very bare—B. Webby. Foreman.
Ranger's Report. I have to report that during the month of April twelve head of stock were impounded and fourteen head released, not quite the nuffiher impounded the month previous. For the month of April 1. have to report that the street lighting fads now greatly improved; the whole 11 lamps having been duly overhauled and repairs carried out. I have- made several experiments on the street, lumps and find thai the saving to the Council is nearly a half a drum. The whole trouble with the lamps w„ s flint too much water was allowed to rush in i1«-bu-ki't of the generator and thus cause the light to flare strongly. Dunstan Street .and Arthur Street. Streets to be patched. Main and Domain R.<ad.—To be patched. The committee agreed to allow the work to be estimated on the. assumption that all metal would be carted by contract: where streets required patching the metal to be placed in heaps and spread by our .own cart.
Finance Committee's Report. A letter was read from the Paisiafua County Council asking this Council to support them in a petition to Parliament requesting a portion of recently raised London loan for payment of i Local Bodies Antecedent Liabilities. — Received. for £5 19s 3d from Mr Walliugton-. feeing commission for dog-tax registrar was appiwyed of. From H- H. Geddis quoting S4G per page for advertising Ornki, this charge to include photographs, making of 'blocks, and writing up the business! piaccs'and ?JLe district:—Kecpi-ved. The 3 Committee reviewed the arrears list jof Europeans and Native... and decided when framing the estimates not to include fktgC, 'section of the, Native rate. The .CommiT«v.> considered th<? present i salary of the town elisrk's assistant, j and after discussion decided u> *£jSOni- ' mend Council to increase the salary 1 from £1.04 to £l-'" per annum. ' Domain Comrcittee's Beport. | A deputation from the Hormvhenua J Bugby Union waited upon the Commit - ij.ee asking..for full control of the ■ grounds, the Council to receive 15 per j cent, of the takings from football mat- ' ches. After a full and' free disci«ioi! ' the committee promised to recommend to Council that the suggested arrange-; monts be approved of for this stason.
The Domain Committee suggested to the football clubs that a benefit match would be appreciated as funds were required for ground improvement. Several members of the clubs promised at least one benefit match. The cornn'rtee recommend to Council the payment of £2O 2s (id to the Horowhenua Rugby "Union being the proceeds of collections taken at the gate last year. The committee authorised the erection of screen for conveniences recently erected.
