MEETING 01-: GENERAL COMMITTEE A meeting ol tiie general committee ot the l-iorowheiiua A. and P. Association was held oil Saturday aiteinoon. The chair was occupied by M. A. McLeuvey, tiie president. The Noitii Island tsiieep Dog Trial Association wrote stating that a competitor has been requested to send an apology to the llorowlienua A. and P. Association for having disobeyed and insulted an officer ol ihe Association during tiie dog trials at the last show, lie had also been asked lo send another apology to tHe judge, Mr It. .1. McDonald, of Dannevirke. tf the apologies were not received tiie Association would have to take more drastic steps, as it was determined to stamp out. such conduct. In connection with tiie above communication, a letier came to hand i from the competitor complained oi, in which he expressed sorrow tor any misdemeanour he may have committed, and the apology was accepted. The secretary of the New Zealand Council of Agriculture wrote stating j that at a meeting of that body it had j been resolved: That the A. and P. As- j sociations be asked to approach their ; local members of Parliament urging . them to impress upon the Government 1 ihe necessity for the removal during ihe next, session of Parliament of the ; Amusement Tax us applied to A. and P. Associations. A letter was also received from the , Conunissoner of Taxes, giving par- 1 ticulars as to the assessment of the j tax. i “This will cost us about £ili a year . above the tax on the ordinary gale takings," said the secretary. Mr Howell said the imposition of an amusement tax on admission tic- - kets to an agricultural show brought such fixtures into the same category as a circus. The primary idea oj, a show was educational, and in any case very few associations could afford it.
A suggestion was made that before the returns were furnished for the last- show a motion of protest lie passed and brought under the notice of Ihe Finance Minister. This was negatived, and it was decided to instruct Die secretary 1° furnish the returns and pay the tax. At a general meeting held prior to Hie committee meeting, a draft of rules was confirmed.
