■The note of optimism struck by the Mavor in hi.* remark* published in last issue mil and general support among the progreisiTe citizen* of the torrn. Whilst it ha* to be admitted that
■ ..younger centres liave-eorae into being » since Otaki's foundations were laid j ar.d have shown greater development . on modem lines, it will not bo denied I that within the last .few years' a live • and go-aliead spirit has been infused ! into local civic affairs, and the town j ! ’ ■ ijuv. ,-cached a point where it is J j about to enter upon a new phase in its j [ history. Since its formation, the Bor- ! uugh Council has rightly taken up the i matter of the installation of up-to-date public services l'or the town. The undertaking is one of considerable dimensions, but progress has been so good that, as the Mayor has stated, that tenders for the water scheme are to be called within a fortnight. * It is the intention, too, to instul a drainage system as soon as financial a varngements can be made. The lack of these two essentials to a town like Oink; are a , handicap to its progress. The now comer is not attracted, and it is not fair to tlse resident community, to expect .them to continue indefinitely with makeshift and out of date services. Another important matter that is engaging the attention of the local civic authority is that of electric lighting. Indeed, the prospects of the town developing its own source of supply has been fully explored, but with the Mangahao current within reasonable distance of realisation, a reticulation report with a view of utilising this source ' of energy is now under preparation. From tliis it will be apparent that Otaki is on the eve 'of a forward movement that must have beneficial effects on the future of the town of a far-reacli-ing character. What boosting and push can do is well illustrated at the Otaki bench. A* few years ■ ago, the north- ! ern end was practically a blank,'but to-day there is a well-appointed kiosk, j numerous seaside residences, and like j the Kungiuru end, is proving a big attraction, to visitors. A big building programmes is in hand, and before long the-beach will be among the most popular along this coast. From nil points of view. the'Mayor-'s optimism is wellfounded, and if the citizens as a whole | display the same enthusiasm for the | progress and welfare of the town, its I advancement and development are us- j sured. - ■ mnncssm
