STRUCK BY LIGHTNING.

One of tho most severe thunderstorms experienced in Hamilton ior some time passed over the district today, It commenced about 3 a.m. and lasted until about 2 p.m. The lightning was very vivid, and the thunderclaps particularly loud and long, while there was a torrential downpour of rain. * rf 4 r About mid-day-there was an exceptionally loud thunderclap, and shortly after, five cows, owned by Mr E. .T. Anderson, and a bull, owned by Mr D. B. Bryant, of Tc Rapa, were found to | have been struck by lightning. The I animals were in the middle of a pad--1 dock at To Rapa well away from any C trees. From. . their appearance, the I lightning had apparently struck them on the back, and passed along to the head, but none of them was badly t burned. The cows were valued at £6O, v and the bull at about £A. .. . I The rain came down in sheets, and • many low-lying streets were flooded, r while at Frankton the water rose well j over the footpaths. Aporlion of RiveJ road. Claudclands, ' collapsed, but no ‘ other serious damage is reported.
