BIBLE IN SCHOOLS.
AUCKLAND CLERGY'S VIEWS. SCHOOL TEACHERS SHOULD GIVE] INSTRUCTION. I Auckland, March S. The question ol the introduction ot i Bible instruction "into State schools , was discussed in committee by the Council of Christian Congregations \ last evening.- Canon James gave an ' address on the subject, and strongly urged that the time had arrived when j united effort by the citizens should be ; made in the direction of having Bible instruction made part oi the syllabus in the schools. He expressed himselt as entirely opposed to "right oi entry" by clergy, as he considered such instruction should be given by tlie school teachers. Several speakers endorsed the proposals outlined by; Canon James. The proceedings were then'carried on in open council, when, on the motion of Canon James, it was unanimously resolved: "That the Council calls for an amendment- or the Education Act so that Bible instruction according to the London County Council or other agreed 'syllabus shall be given in the State schools within the ordinary school hours by teachers only, without right of entry to any_ others, with a- conscience clause I'or "parents and teachers." It was left to the executive to form a plan of campaign in furtherance of the object in the resolution.
