SPORTING.

The Dannevirke races take place to day and to-morrow.

The Otaki trainer, D. Webster, is taking Bestir, Bonccto and Demoness to the Marlborough fixture on March 9th and 11th.

It is probable that C. Millen, the Weraroa trainer, will make the Marlborough trip with American Beauty. Spring Tide raced all last season without being placed. Her win in the Second Hack Hurdles at Woodvillc was the first break in a long list of out's. Volo was blocked when making his run in the Stewards' Handicap at Wanganui, and with a clear run would have won.

The following horses are expected t: run well in their Dannevirke engagements: —Complex, Passionless, Satin, Festivity, Gold Light, and Five-eighths. After Volo had won the "double" at Woodvillc he was offered to a well known owner for £750, at which figure he could not be classed dear.

There was a falling off of £42,902 in the totalisator returns at the Wanganui Jockey Club's autumn meeting. This is almost sure to mean reduced stakes next season.

The New Zealand gelding Solfanello (9.12) figures among the acceptances for the Newmarket Handicap, to be run at Fleuiingtoii on March 4.

Egotism has not won a race this season, but she has earned £72U in stakes as a result of being three times second and once third.

One of the best hacks seen out for a long time is the Taranaki-owned Still Sea (by Absurd—Senspray),. owned by Mr B. L. Joll, and trained by Sid Reid. The Martian colt The Cypher, who was bought recently in New Zealand for 2000 guineas by an Australian sportsman, has joined P. Guanine's team at Caulfield, and; all going well, he is expected to make his debut under silk in Australia at Flemingtbn on March 4th. .

Melbourne files state that though Mermin is looking, well, he has either got very lazy or has lost his form, for, when going alone oi in company, he is unable to make time ; n his gallops. The win of Ngata i"t Hi? Wanganui Cup was very popular, and his owner, Mr Jas. Bull, came in for hearty congratulations. Ngata was in the pink of condition, and in bringing this about a word of praise is due to J. T. ("Jimmy") Morris, of Martou, who .was confident the son of Maniapoto—Daisy Clipper would win, as he had done all that had been asked of him on the tracks. -

Amythas made heavy work of it all the way in the Wanganui Cup, though McFlynn used his whip and spurs to some purpose. Egotism is another animal that ran disappointingly. Nothing, however, had a chance with Ngata on the day. for rarely has the Cup race been won so easily. He ran 2.59 — equalling Dusky Eve's record—and made good class horses look like hacks.

Dudu claims the distinction of having won the Wanganui Cup on three occasions, ari'd Resolution and Client both won twice. Dudu holds the weight-carrying record —9.2. Since the distance was reduced to a mile and three-quarters some fast times have been recorded, the best being Dusky Eve's 2.59. Arthur Ollivcr rode four winners, R.-Dcrrett three, and T. Belcher, F. Matthews and M. Ryan two each.

A yearling by Absurd —Ballarat submitted to auction at Wanganui on Saturdy morning, on behalf of Mr J. L. Nicholls, was brought by Mr G. D. Greenwood for 450 guineas.

When Gloaming can stroll home from such animals as Tamatete and Thespian, it would be hard to gauge how good the son of The Welkin really is over a "six furlong scamper. As there is no horse in New Zealand capable of extending him. it is to be hoped Mr Mason will take his "flying machine" across to Australia.
