MANAWATU BRIDGE ENDANGERED.
CONFERENCE OF LOCAL BODIES ARRANGED. The question of the encroachment of the Manawatu River at the ShannonFoxton bridge was discussed at a meeting ot the Manawatu County Council last week, and a letter from that body was received at the Horowhenua County Council meeting on Saturday. It was stated that tiie Engineer had pointed out the necessity for taking immediate action lo saleguard against interruption of communication by road in the near future, and the following resolution was passed: “Thai the Council views with alarm Hie; danger to the road and embankment ne... the Shannon bridge by the encroach ..nt of the Alauawatu River, and that the Horowhenua County Council and the Foxton Borough Council be invited to send representatives to meet the representative of this Council at the Shannon bridge and confer as to what‘steps should he taken to keep the road open for traffic.” The writer also observed ihat he had been directed to suggest that the conference take place as soon as possible. Cr. McLeavey said lie understood they were to meet the Manawatu councillors last month. Cr. Barber said the arrangement of the meeting was left to him, but, he was unable to get tiie member for the adjoining riding ol the Manawatu County to fix a date, and the meeting was not held. The chairman (Cr. Monk) said the Horowhenua Council Committee already appointed should meet the Manawatu aud Foxton delegates at the bridge during the present month, as the matter seemed urgent. He suggested Monday week, February 20, as tite duv of the meeting.
This was agreed to, the County Clerk being instructed to make the arrangements.
