ADULTERATED MILK.
DEFENDANT FINED £lO. At the last sitting of he Otaki S.M. Court B. S. Reed (Inspector) proceeded : uinst J. Robinson, for adulteration of milk by adding 12 per cent, of water. The defendant’s counsel (Mr Atmore) in mitigation of a heavy penally pieaded that the present milking season from the. point of view of milk product ion was an extremely good one and
the City Council was able, consequently, to obtain adequate supplies from fuetories near “Wellington. It was commu it knowledge amongst local suppliers that the Buhui Factory was turning its milk into butter. This being so the offence charged was far less serious. A supplier was paid accordingly 1o the amount of butter fat supplied and the addition of water to the milk would make no difference to the amount of butter-fat. Under such circumstances no supplier would deliberately add water to his milk because lie would then be carting a quantity of useless water to and from the factory. If he wanted to add water he surely would add it to the skimmed milk when he had received it baqk on the farm. Np sjine man would cart 12 per cent, of water a mile or so to and from a factory. A further factor. Counsel added, was that the adulteration had taken place during the height of the season. He would submit that if the adulteration had been intentional, the defendant wpuld do it not at the height of- the season, but rather towards the end of the season when the supply was decreasing in volume. A One of £lO and costs was iuflipte 1.
