REDUCTION OF WAGES.
CONSIDERED BY HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL. Members of the Hutt County Council once again discussed the question of lowering the wages of roadmen on "Wednesday. The matter was brought up by Councillor Whiteman, who suggested that roadmen's wages should bo reduced to from 13s to Us per day, that payment for one-horse teams should be 1 reduced to 20s per day, for two-horse 1 teams to 255, and for tlirce-horse teams to 30s, basing his arguments upon the fall in the cost of living. Other mem- ■ bers considered that, the present was ■ not a time for reduction, and. Council- , lor H. Foley expressed the opinion that if a reduction was decided upon, tho , result would be a falling away in the amount of work done. The chairman, Cr. J. Barclay, suggested that a eon- . ■ferenee with representatives of the . Makara County Council should be nr- . ranged, in order that uniforn'iity, might j be had, and moved that payment for , horse teams should be reduced, as sug- j gested by Councillor Whiteman, but ( •that the question of roadmen’s wages t should be considered after the confer- t ence with Makara County Council re- t presen tu tives. Councillor Atkinson t agreed that there should be a reduction t in regard to the teams, but said that i no action should be taken to lower the wages of roadmen, until the rulings of t the Arbitration Amendment Act wore t known.
