THE PIONEERS

The Pioneers, a baud of M and maidens, who were organised in h'oxton by Mr Sutherland, and who have just completed a successful tour of Hawke’s Hay, Taranaki and Wairaraj:a districts, gave a pleasing entertainment at Otaki on Monday night. The notice announcing their appearance, however, was short, and in consequence the attendance was not large. It was, however, very enthusiastic, and each and every item was vociferously encored. The star performer, Mr Xohi Toki, who was with “Fads, and Fashions’’ arnl other loading companies, proved the star performer, and his singing was heartily applauded. He is the possessor of a line rich voice, and every item given by hits was fuliy appreciated. Mr Skip Baker was another performer of outsaading merit, and his songs were all well received. Miss Gwen Church has a pleasing contralto voice, and her various items were also well rendered. Messrs I’atuaka, McGregor 12), I). Nicholla, Jacob Utiku, Torn Elers, with others, were also very successful, the latter being scon to great advantage as a comedian. Instrumental items were also pleasingly rendered, and the manipulation of guitars, banjos, ukuleles was well done, while an imitation of a trombone by Mr Mita Hori fairly brought down the house. Miss Polly Hakaraia proved an able pianiste. The little band of performers is to be congratulated for providing such a bright and breezy entertainment, and it is hoped they will pay Otaki a return visit. v -J--' Following is the programme an rendered:—Overture, Miss Pauline Hakaraia; Opening Chorus, “ You’ve Got to Get Busy,” Company; Song, “Phoebe,” Mr G.
