BURGLARY AT PAEKAKARIKI.

So far no trace has been found of tho burglars who entered the refreshment rooms at Paekakuriki on Saturday night and took away the safe and a large amount of 'csh, despite the fact that the .detective force is very active. Fortunately for the owner, Mr Thomson, the safe was not taken a week earlier as it then contained a very large sum of money which, luckily, had been banked just previous to tho robbery. It has also been ascertained that war bonds and deeds, which were thought to have been stolen, are safe, Mr Thomson having these at his private residence. It was also fortunate that on Saturday night the sum of £7O was placed elsewhere owing to the fact that the safe key was not available, while £lO of three-penny pieces were also left from the safe for the same reasou. The thieves, however, have made a substantial haul, rvhich includes 110 sovereigns, and some fifty or sixty pounds in notes. Yesterday' further investigation was made at Paekakariki, but beyond the crow-bar, taken from a van, and the barrow in which the safe was wheeled away, nothing was found, and on account of numerous marks it is not known whether tho lorry used went north or south, although it is stated;: that a lorry; passed through Otaki at about 3 a.m. on Sunday morning. It is evident that the thieves used glorcs as no finger-prints can be found. It is probable, however, that an arrest will be made at an early date.
