PARAPARAUMU SPORTS.
A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. : Tho promoters of the above gathering • are to be highly complimented on the 1 sports' meeting, held on the domain on Monday, when fine weather prevailed. The committee for months past have worked assidiously and by their labors have considerably improved the grounds by the erection of a picket fence, tho erection of seats, and a general levelling of the tracks. There was a splendid attendance, which included a large contingent from Otaki, while Wellington was well represented. The competitors, although not numerous in some events, were fleet-footed and provided fine sport throughout the flay, many of the contests ending in ex-' citing finishes. The various officials worked splendidly throughout, and with Messrs J. Barnett and- "Dug" Howell a* joint secretaries, Mr C. Brazier as an assistant, Messrs Len Howell and J. M. Irvine, as general supervisors, Messrs M. H. Ayre, W. Cromb, and T. Petheric.k as judges the Club was most for-
tunate as all proved most useful members. They were ably assisted by others, chief among the number being Mr E. Clarke, the Club's chairman, and Messrs White, Clunie, and Ryder. Among the visitors was Mr W. H. Field, M.P., while the Wellington centre of the N.Z.A.A. Association had representatives present. The Otaki Brass Band ! was also present in force, and rendered several fine selections during the day. A pleasing feature of 'the outing was the roya,l manner in which re--1 presentatives of various bodies Were entertained at Mrs Pratley's, where a very line spread was .served and fully enjoyed. Following are the results of the various events:— 120 yards local handicap, first prize gold medal, second trophy value £l: R. Maclean, 5 yds, 1; H. L. Udy.'scr., 2; E. Brazier, 2 yds, 3. AY Howell, scr., also started. A good race, won by a foot. No time taken. One mile handicap, first trophy value £2, second trophy value £1 10s:W. G. Hayward, 80 yds, 1; J. E. MeKinlay, 25 yds, 2; A. "*Y. White, 70 yds, 3. Also started—B. Barker, W. 11. Mowbray, D. Bruce, D. Leef, G, T. N". W. Craig, J. C. Johnston. Mowbray and Bruce led the field for . the first lap, then the latter took command and made a break of fifteen yards. Hayward then ran into second position, followed by McKinlay, White, and Craig. Hayward led in the last lap, with Bruce, McKinlay,' Craig, White, and Clunie following in order. Hayward, however, was never troubled and won easily by twenty yards. Time, 4.40. .

The race was a very fine one, the judges only with difficulty placing the winners as the. whole of the entrants finished almost together. Time, 10 sec. Second heat: G. B. Anderson, 2} yds, 1; H. Thompson gave a fine exhibition of jumping, and easily cleared the bar in an exhibition jump nt 5 ft. din. Putting the shot (161bs), first trophy value £1 10s, second trophy value 15s: P. Munro, 47ft. lin., 1; Frank Howell (12ft.), 2; R. J. Anderson, Sft., 3. Munro (Australasian champion) was in great form and beat his own New Zealand record of 46 ft. by over a foot. The world's record is 51ft. 3in. Wheelbarrow race, first trophy value £1 10s. second trophy value 10s 6d: Cornwall and Fisher 1, Hurran and Murphy 2, Clarke and Harris 3. Boys' half-mile walk, first trophy value 10s, second trophy value ss: E. Harris 1, V. Reeve 2. Time, 4.40 4-5.' There were 'about twenty entrants, many of whom performed most creditably, the placed lads in particular giving a good exhibition. Mowbray, Futter, Barker, Bruce, Craig and Johnston also competed. White, Mowbray, and Clunie were prominent for some time, but in the run home Hayward closed up and ran into second place, being beaten by two yards after a fine race. L. Udy journeyed to Levin and annexed the 220 yds handicap in good j style. The gate takings amounted to £42, while the fruit stall realised £24, soft I drinks £l4, and refreshments £l6, which reflects credit on all responsible. , The ladies in charge ef the stalls are deserving of kudos. j The live weight of the sheep was 128 lbs. Mr R. Maclean carried off i the prize with 330 lbs. The dead I weight was 701bs. Messrs Barton and i I. Stone guessed tho correct weight i and divided the prize. The sheep realised the sum of £8 Is, due to the efforts ; of Mr W. J. '■ There were no protests at the meet- '' ing and everything passed off smoothly, thanks to the able committee and officials. Next year the Club hopes to offer better inducement by giving larger prize-money which should be an inducement to many leading athletes.
