OTAKI BRASS BAND.
CONCERT AT OTAKI. | The concert and dance, organised by i members and supporters of the Otaki I Brass Band, held In Brights’ Theatre | on Wednesday night, was a great suci ccs.s, and as a result the debt of £OO i on the instrument fund will be almost, j wiped out. The audience was not only j large, but was most appreciative, and r practically every item was vocifer- | uusly applauded. The opening selec- ( tion by the band was an exceptionally : line one, while the vocal item by Miss I F. Bcvan was nicely given, but, unfor- ! tunatcly, the young lady’s sweet voice was. not heard to full advantage on account of playing her own accompaniment. The encore was well deserved. Mr Puku Rikibana, as usual, proved a favourite, and his solo was well given. He was also heard to advantage in a trio with Messrs Jacob and Brown Hapcta. Mr and Mrs Davies, new to Otaki audiences, were well received, and their vocal duet earned for them a hearty encore, while Mrs Cooze, the well-known ballaaist, of Wellington, delighted the audience and had to respond to an emphatic .incore. As a tribute to her performance she was presented with a lovely bunclf of flowers. Mr Cooze, as a comedian, fairly brought down the house and received prolonged approbation, while Mr Ross Noireys as a dame comedian was also very successful, and made a "hit" with his audience. Mr Levy sang very nieely, while Mr Byron Brown recited in his usual most polished manner. A clever exhibition of club-swiiiing by Captain Bax was aiso a fine item, and one fully appreciated.
A dance followed, and the large number appreciated a' good tloor, fine music and an appetising supper. The •latter was in charge of Mrs J. K. Bills. After supper had been partaken of, Mr J. Fielding, on behalf ol the band, returned hearty thanks to Mrs J. ft. Bills and her slafT of assistants for so kindly presiding over the refreshment room. Mrs Bills suitably responded. Cheers were then given for the baud, a bile the ladies sang "For They Are jolly Good Fellows."
The door takings amounted to £2l (id, while with the tickets sold die wial will be £32. As the expenses are ow there will be a substantial credit, caving only a few pounds owing on be instruments. An effort will be unde to-night to wipe off' the balance, i being the intention of the band to nay in the streets and take up a colecciou.
