"SAVE THE CHILDREN " FUND.
j OTAKI'S EFFORT. | SUCCESSFUL SHOP DAY. The shop and auction sale, held at Brights' Theatre on Wednesday last in aid of the fund for the starving children of Europe, passed off most successfully, thanks to the energy and enthusiasm shown by a number of | willing workers of- both sexes. From an early hour in the morning gifts of all kinds came forward profusely, and when the shop opened in the afternoon there was a large and miscellaneous collection of goods to disposo of. The public rolled up in force, all anxious; to buy, and good business resulted. /, In the evening the residue of gifts' was offered for sale, by auction. Mr Byron Brown, who has lost none of his f persuasive eloquence, wielded the. I hammer, and succeeded in securing excellent prices. j Afterwards dancing was indulged in ; with much zest, to music kindly supplied by the Cook Orchestra. Miss Simcox had charge of the refreshment room during the afternoon, and Mrs J. Bills in the evening, these j ladies being supported by Mesdam.es j H. Nicolson and J. Fielding, together with a number of other willing work- I ers. Mrs Swabey and Miss Lee prosided over the produce stall; Mrs Pritehard, fancy stall; Mrs Humphrey, flowers; Mr T. Swensson, miscellaneous. Among the many willing workers, special mention must be made of the energetic, and courteous secretary (Mr F. G. Davies), who was responsible for ( the whole of the organisation, and j worked splendidly. Mr J. P. Brandon also proved a live worker indeed, ■while a mede of praise is also due to Messrs Jack Fielding and C. Kilsby, who devoted a great amount of time and trouble to the canvass of the town, collecting produce and helping in other ways. The takings at the sale, together with public subscriptions received to date, total about £95, and this sum will be augmented by to-night's entertainment and further donations that are expected. Details of the* takings at the sale, etc., will appear in) our next issue. j | FURTHER DONATIONS.
