DAMAGE BY RATS.
A rat is able to make a meal off almost anything, and the proprietors of a big building in Hastings knew to their cost that these destructive animals are even able to enjoy a ft ---I of roots. Two large palms which were used for ornamental purposes itt the. building were attacked by rats, with the ivsiilt that the paint, from the te- t up to the stalks, was practically c.t tit cl v* eaten away. This act ol destrulion, however, fades into insignificance compared with, the bad lurk which fell .to a Hastings lady only a couple of Weeks ago. This lady, who i a well-known horticulturist, recently paid a, vtsit to England, and while there spent £75 on valuable roots which she intended to bring to New Zealand. The roots weie shipped from England all right with the passenger, and on arrival in Auckland were in excellent condition. At Auckland they were transhipped to Napier, and on arrival at Napier it was found that rat 3 had practically destroyed the whole of the £75 worth while in transit from Auckland.
