PRESENTATION.

TO MR M. H. AYKE. Commissioners of the Otaki Town Board, together with the. Board's employees, met at the Board's office on Sat unlay to honour Mr M. li. Ay re, who has resigned his position as clerk alter several years' service. Commissioner Brandon (Chairman of the Board) stated they had met to take the opportunity of expressing regret at Mr Ayre's departure from office, and at the same time to make, a small presentation in appreciation of services rendered, in asking Mr Ayre's acceptance of a very line walking stick, silver mounted aud suitably engraved, and a case of pipes, Mr Brandon said the slick was not givon to Mr Ayre because he was old and decrepid, while the pipes were given to him so that he might, iu his quiet moments, have a " whiff" and look back with pleasure- lo the past. Mr Ayre, ho said, had always been a good and faithful servant, aud all trusted j he, Mrs Ayre, and the Ayre family would live long to enjoy the benefits of Otaki. Personally, he sincerely regretted Mr Ayre's retirement, but. hoped to see him iu friendly relations for years to come. (Applause.) Commissioners Nicolson, Kilsby, Bills and Cockrell aud Mr Webby endorsed the chairman's remarks, and wished Mr Ayre long life, health ami prosperity. Mr Ayre said he found il very diflicult to express his thanks, but assured 1 all that he was deeply grateful lor such valuable presentations. He thanked the chairman, commissioners —past and present —for their kind nesses to him, ami stated as a clerk he hail only done hi" best. He had reIceived great, assistance from the Chairman, for which he was indeed grateful, and he was glad to know that his efforts had given satisfaction. He offered In help the new clerk (Mr Davies) and the Board in any way, and would always cherish happy memories of day- gone by.
