OTAKI TOWN BOARD.
A meeting of members of the Otaki Town Board was held last night. Present: Commissioners J. P. Brandon (chairman), C. Kilsby, T. B. Bax, J* K. Bills. H. Nicolson, H. Cockrell. An , apology for absence was received from Com. Broadway. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows: — From W. Chandler (inspector) stating that a complaint, made by Air Collins (Convent road) was not altogether justified, as the building complained of was in accordance with the by-laws. From K. J. Stavelev, resigning as solicitor to the Board.—Accepted with regret, and a letter ordered to be written thanking Air Staveley for past services. The appointment of a successor was held over. From G. Gallagher, T. W. Bwensson f and A. Bishop, applying for the position of ranger, the former at 7s OcVand driving tees, and the too later at 10s ami driving fees. —The application of Swensson was accepted. A resident, who did' not wish his name divulged, suggested that if there was a re-naming of Kuaparaha street, commonly known as Convent Road, it l><* re-named Church Street, and that a notice-board be put up declaring such, also that the proper jkijiic for Jubilee Road (Waoronga Road) be adhered to. —To be considered if necessary. From Palgcty and Co.. Ltd., appoint- < ing Air Les. .Skertnan as representative to have voting powers when oecaFroin A. Dixon (Kangiuru) applying for permission to graze cows on the road during flood time. —Granted. The Chairman said he had been waited upon and asked to call a public meeting so that the situation concerning starving children on the Continent could be considered. It had been said by Sir Thomas Mackenzie that charity began at homo, and with this he agreed, adding there were many in New Zealand who needed help. However, if anything was to be done liesuggested writing to the Wellington City Council and ascertaining what was being done by that body. All commissioners spoke on the subject. ami it was agreed to fall in with the Chairman*# suggestion. Com. Kilsbv considered that, there was likely to bo whole carcases of mutton dumped overboard or allowed to go bad at ports in New Zealand, and suggested that ais endeavour should |>e made to get some of this meat, to the starving people*. The remarks were r I approved by other members. ■ j The Chairman said that by next, meeting Air Davie* would probably 1 have art opportunity of considering the reports received some time ago on • water, light and drainage. He pointed out that a Joan for light, had been -auctioned, and considered application should be made for it. He favoured -etting up commit let **, at an early date* to consider the matter- mentioned, f On the motion of Com. Cockrell, Com-. Brandon, Bill* and Kilsby were i congratulated on being appointed justices of the peace. Com. Cockrell said it had been stated that as be v.a- a member of the Board he was allowed to have an encroaching step at. his. shop. To correct an erroneous imprd-sion be said if the Board wished he would remove it, although the encroachment wan only a matter of three inches.
