TOWN BOARD MATTERS.

' ARRIVAL OF ENGINEER-CLERK. Members of the Otaki Town Board met yesterday forenoon to. welcome Mr Davies, the newly-appointed engineer-clerk. The Chairman (Com. p P Brandon) said it gave him pleasure to accord Mr Davies a eordm. welcome to Otaki. He promised Mr Davies the whole-hearted support ot the Board, and said that undei y (Mr Davies’) guidance all felt certain the Board’s affairs would progress. Electric light, drainage, and- water would soon require attention, but oi a while, said the speaker, they would have to move quietly. Finance w.is the Board’s trouble, caused partly through Native-owned lands, but he hoped that, with the now valuation, the Board’s finances would be more buoyant. Mr Brandon also extended to Mr Davies a cordial welcome for Mrs Davies and family, and trusted thev would live to enjoy many happy days. He also assured Mr Davies that the retiring clerk-a faithful old servant, and one whom all d do his best to assist till he (Mi Davies) had got more into touch with ,o< Mr Davies, in replying, fully appreciated tho kind things said, and while recognising there was a deal o w -to do, he would do lus best—m fac he considered plenty of work a good, healthy sign, and a thing ho rathe, liked. His duties, he fdt sure, vouM be lightened by the support of Commissioners. Ho desired to thank Mr\vre for his cordiality. He appreciated all that had been done for him. and he wished to assure nil that lie and Mrs Davies had already gained a favourable impression of Otaki.
