FATALITY AT LEVIN.
The death occurred at Fairfield, Levin, on Wednesday last, of Mr Arch. Gray, under distressing circumstances. At about 9 a.m. on Wednesday (says the “Chronicle”) he told Mrs Gray that he would go and catch the horse with which to drive to Levin. A few minutes afterwards a shot sounded, and on search being made, Mr Gray was found a short distance off, lying on the ground with a revolver beside him and a bullet wound in the head. Medical aid was summoned, but Mr Gray was found to be quite dead. The iate Mr Gray was an old resident of the distinct, and for many years was constable and clerk of the court at Levin. When he retired he took up farming. Though not identifying himself prominently with public life, lie was greatly respected for his good qualities and his integrity’ an.i upright character as a Government officer.
Latterly be had been in indifferent health. He had been reeeiviug medical attention owing to nervous trouble, but during the past, day or two seemed to be much better. Much sympathy will be felt for Mrs Gray, who is herself in bad health, and for the other members of the family in the. sad bereavement which has overtaken them in such tragic circumstances. At an inquest yesterday the coroner brought in a verdict that deceased took his life with a revolver whilst suffering from neurastenia.
