The floods in the Otaki river las! week were responsible for bringing down large quantities of timber, and :>•= n result the beach is well strewn with ivood. Carters have been busy "making hay while the sun shine-." and replenishing theii stocks of firewood. The Levin Chamber of Commerce has decided to call the attention ol the Postal Department to the hopelessly inadequate provision made foi the public at the Levin post office. At the meeting several speakers declared thai it frequently took a quarter of an hour to get attention in postal business, due to the inadequate stuff provided. The aeroplane which has been in Wairarapa for the past few days, is expected in Levin to-morrow. It is probable that the machine" will come as far south as Otaki.
Mr J. B. Tustin, local representative of the National Mutual Life Association, will make periodical visits to Levin, and it is hoped our northern friends will avail themselves of the opportunity to insure with him.

A concert, at which high-class talent will perform, will lie given a Waikanae on Tuesday, November '.'tli in aid of the funds of the Otaki Bras Band. The management is leaving tu stone unturned to make the function : great success, and we confidently ad vise. Waikanae and district resident to keep the date in mind. A final reminder is given all Intei ested that, nominations for the County Council elections close on Tuesday (tomorrow) at noon. If necessary the elections will be. held on Wednesday of next week, 10th inst. So far three candidates are definitely announce I tor the Te Horo Biding, therefore an election is certain for that riding For the Otaki Riding no one has as yet publicly announced his candidature.
It has been estimated that the fioo I waters at Shannon covered an area 15 to 20 miles in length by five milewide, due largely to the stop-banks on the Manawatu breaking' away under the strain. In the Makerua section there were throe feet of water on tin road at Seifert's mill, and the water entered Spiers' mill. The Seifert Co. lost about SO head of stock. The approaches to the bridge on the ShannonFoxton road were slightly damaged.
The difference, in the rainfall over small areas is remarkable at time-. Comparison between the figures for the rainfall at Otaki and Te Horo show that, as a rule. Te Horo generally has a heavier fall than Otaki. This rule was reversed last week, however. During the four rainy days last week —Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday the rainfall at Otaki totalled 5.65 in, while at Te Horo—only live miles away —it was only 4.10 in. Mr A. E. E. During tielive years of its operations the Society handled the sum of £-L2«L At the final meeting of the Society's committee i* was decided to hand the funds remaining to the credit of the Society (a sun of £l4 11- 3d) to the County Patrioti-Asf-rociation. Tribute was paid to tie Jine services rendered to the Society by Mr C. S. Keedwell as secretary.

Yesterday vrs : recognised as "Temperance Sunday" by Methodists throughout New Zealand, and in all pulpits throughout the Dominion the ministers made special reference to the liquor question. At Otaki lait night the Rev. w. G. Blade, M.A.. spoke on the great eeinomic wastage caused through the lienor traffic, and also dwelt on the moral aspect of the question. He quoted extensively frotn the official year book to show whit might be done with the money at present wasted on drink, and said th*t virtually one in every six children born in New Zealand was doomed to become branded by the erase of liquor, inasmuch as the convictions rjoj drankenseess each year were crae-siztc <fi the number of children torn in the Dominion.
