GARDEN PARTY. The garden party, held at Manuka;: on Wednesday afternoon in glorioim weather, proved one of the best. Th 1 attendance, which included visitors from Levin, Otaki, and elsewhere, wa • large, and all made the most of the outing. The function was held in the picturesque grounds of Mr and Mrs Rob!. Bevan, and a more suitable spot could not have been found on any other part of the coast. The large, well-kept lawns, the beautifully laid out flower gardens with choice blooms, Ihe many beautiful shrubs, etc., were all freely admired, while the hostesses—Mcsdames Bevan and Bryant—could not have been improved upon. During the day afternoon tea was served and fully enjoyed, while musical items were rendered, to the enjoyment of all. Among the vocalists wore Mrs Gill, Miss Malcolm, and Mrs* Joan Bevan. Mrs Smith and Mr Gill played the ;ocompaniment>. As a result of the affair the funds of the Anglican Church will benefit to the extent of £9 10s. In the silver spoon competition Mr Gill proved the winner. The drawing for the other competition is held over for the time being. Garden parties are generally looked upon as an outing for ladies, but on Wednesday there were quite a nunib'-r of the sterner sex. who spent an enjoy able and profitable time. Not only were they loud in their praises of the lovely gardens, but took more than a passing interest in Mr Bevan’s pedigree stock, some of which had cost the owner nearly £l5O per head. The animals, thanks tq careful attention, were found in' perfect condition, ami many were the complimentary remarks passed thereon. The up-to-date cow sheds, etc., were favourably commented upon, while all expressed admiration at the large and well-kept orchard. All trees, including lemons and oranges, wore found in tip-top condition. pruning had been done systematically. while there were no traces of blight or other diseases. A leading South Island gardener was loud in his praises of Mr Bevan’s handiwork.

The break-down in the engine at the Mnnnkau factory on Wednesday threatened lo prove a serious mishap, but owing to the capabilities of the manager ('Mr Meharryj and Mr Miles the trouble was rectified within a space of two hours.
