Cudby, inspector to the Hutt County Council, has completed nearly thirty vfars of service \vi li that body. At Christchurch on Friday last t!>«sudden death occurred of Mrs T. M liaxlett. wife of Mr Haslet t, National Spiritual AVork Director of tin V.M.C.A., who visited this distri.recently. _Mrs Ilaslett was known to ■< large number of University studentthroughout New Zealand as .Mi-- ■ lessie Abernetliy. M.A.. late travelling secretary of the Uhrisi s-* Union, prior to which she was one of the teaeiteis at the Wanganui Girls’ High School. Mr and Mrs Haslett had been mftrrieo only a few months. News lias been received by cable of the death of Mr P. llennessy, e: who died at Chicago. Mr liennessy left New Zealand with his daughter on a vis-it to the Old Country, and w.:returning via America. The deceased was held in the highest esteem in .Shannon, and when the sad news varnadc known there were many exprossions of sympathy. Mr Heunessy lias held many public positions, and at one time he was Mayor of Fo.vton and at the time of bis death he was chairman uf the Fo.vton Harbour Board. Hi was a willing worker in the Patriotic •Society during the war. Daily Times'.” The death took place at New Plymouth on Thursday of Alt Chow Chou.', who was a well-known figure in Taranaki, and who has been credited with establishing the dairy imj ustry ia the province. Bora in China 52 years ag*>, he came to the Dominion in 1806. an 1 subsequently established the fungus industry. Later he set up in business '• in New Plymouth, but after twenty i years turned his attention to dairy | farming. In ISS7 he established the Jubiless Dairy Factory at Eithum. .Mr Chong claimed to have been a pioneer of the dairy industry in the Klthaa: district. At one time he had 200 cov u in milk in order to be independent in the matter of supply for hi- factory. After sixteen years’ experience, Mr Chong sold out. Retiring from bu-i- ---, ness in 1500, he resided iu New Plymouth. Mr Chong married a daughter of Mr Joseph AVhatton. of Masteriori. iu 1870. He is survived by a widow and three daughters and three sons. Mr G. E. Cooper, a Moari AVar vet> ran, died at his residence at Mount x Eden last v.nek in his 80th year. H • participated in the ’Victorian -and Otago gold rushes, and in 1803, duri: g ’he Mhori AVar, he joined the 2nd Regiment Waikato Militia, taking part in various engagements, including the Battle of Orakau. Later he joined von Tempsky and served und< r him against the Maoris. He also helped to quell the Te Kooti rebel lion. For eighteen years afterward.he held the position of janitor at the Auckland Museum, retiring some tec years ago. He is survived by a widow and grown-up family.
