The Club is to be congratulated on its meeting, which went off without a ; hitch, and which constitutes a record for a September meeting. 'Well over £9OO was taken at the outer gate.- o.i the first day-. . 1 The course was in splendid order, and Mr R- Wooding, caretaker, is deserving . of special mention. He had, unI doubtedly, put in much time _ and 1 labour. Thanks of owners ami trainers are duo to bim. The Club could do with a lbs totalisator. This necessary adjunct wou be appreciated, and perhaps the C-ub , vh en making improvements ior next vear will consider the suggestion. The Otaki Brass Band was m atten- | dance on both days, and rendered , programmes of ruusigrrS^ » W j iions in -all. I- j I was a pity that seats were not pro- j } vided for players. ; ’ The, motor car- that were at tax- j i races were valued at many thousands f of pounds. The grounds were literally ; i packed with them on both days. i \ The president, Mr Ben Liag, mad- j k v-;—.-.--if as nopular ns ever, and ir _ " . . * -,zio a : d not i catenae ior tilb overlook the press. plate won by Air- Harry Palmer’s Fisher in Australia—a trophy given by the Prince of AVales for the Renown Hurdles. Both trophies caused much attention.

Although there were several spills in the Steeplechase on the second day, no one was badly hurt. Some of the lads appeared lo be made of indiarubber —judging by the way they bounced!

An inquiry was held yesterday into j the alleged inconsistent running of I Rouen, but the explanation given was I accepted as satisfactory. Air Covle, handicappor, after adjust- . ing weights for ,t.he second day, left hurriedly for the Auckland meeting. Among the visitors to the meeting were Sir James Carroll and Alessrs AX’. H. Field and AX'. S. Glenn, At’s.P. There were numerous owners at the meeting—that is judging by the way the press stand was crowded. Several who knew practically nothing about racing were allowed on the stand, and the movements of the pressmen were badly hampered. A small compartment, specially set apart as on other courses, would be an improvement. Of 73 acceptors, only three were scratched on the second day. Tho meeting was a record one compared with other September meetings, no less than £67,328 being put through the totalisator on the two days. In 1918 (one day only) £26,3(5(5 passed through, in 1939 (when there was -to train service) there vias £14,075. On the second day this year no less than £27.751 passed through the tote. For June, 1920, £33.376 passed through the machine.
