A SERIOUS CHARGE.
ALLEGED ATTEMPT TO BURN OTAKI NATIVE HOSTEL.
What appears to have been a most deliberate attempt to burn the Otaki •' Native hostel was made at about six i o’clock on Sunday morning, when two of the boarders—Pa rat a brothers—discovered a fire in the pantry. They immediately raised an alarm, and in record time tiie flames were subdued, but not before a hole was burned in the wall. On investigation it was found that old cardboard boxes, etc., had been placed in a heap, saturated with kero sene, and set alight. Constable Satliei ley was communicated with, and at'tei i deal of trouble accused one of the college boys, a If-year-old lad named Samuel Oilman, who. it is understood, now frankly admits the cliaigc. Thi bov was apprehended, and will appeal before the Court this afternoon.
The structure, which is a fine, laig one. practically new, accommodate many boarders, and had it been dc stroved would have been a serious lu» to the district.
