SATURDAY HALF-HOLIDAY
DISCUSSED BY OTAKI RESIDENTS.
At the public meeting of ratepayers at Otaki on Monday evening Mr H. Nieolson said he would like to see an opinion given on the half-holiday question.
The Chairman (Mr H. Cockrell) pointed oul that many were in favour of Saturday, and while personally not favouring a change, said no doubt if Saturday were agreed upon all would soon get used to it. Ho pointed out that l’almorston North was at present reaping a big beneiit through Feildiug having the Saturday half-holiday.
Mi Xicolsoii said, as a matter of fact, Palmerston North was now strongly advocating for the Saturday half-holi-day. and was vigorously circularising various local bodies.
-\lr \ aughau proposed that the meeting express itself in favour of Saturday, contending that it would be no hardship to business people, while assistants would reap an advantage. The motion was seconded by Mr H. Vann, who stated lie know business people who had voted against such ft proposal, but who now would not depart from it. Mr C. H. Williams also supported .the motion, and said his two shops canto under ditto rent Acts. Mr C. Watson asked if all lines of business would come under the saute head, and was assured by the chairman such would be the case. He could not, however, understand why some shops were allowed to remain open while others closed. After further discussion the inotiun was declared carried.
