THE GOLDEN WEST COAST

On Monday night last, at the fortnightly meeting of the Otaki Literary and Debating Club, Mr A. K. Budkin delivered a most interesting paper touching on the history of the West Coast. Mr Budkin gave a few geographical details of the “Coast,” anti dealt largely with the gold rash there in tne si sties. In March, X2G3, some 5000 to 6000 landed daily in Westland, and in ISG6 the population of the district was roughly estimated at 30,000. Mr Rudkin told how the gold was won, quoted instances of big gold find*, told stories of murders and big theft* of gold in the early days, and gave a few details of the progress of settlement on the Wert Coast. Rev. Petrie read a brief sketch of the life of the late Mr Richard John Seddon, Mr T.
