"THE BRAND." i ( TOMORROW NIGKT. Rex Beach's mosi powerful screen drama since "The Spoilers" is "The Brand," in which Kay Laurel!, Russell »Simpson. aud Robert M-Kim are featured. Laid in the Alaskan wilderness, the story is the creation of a man who knows Alaska as we know New Zea- | kind, and the result is practically a flawless production. "The Brand" rank* well to the front among screen ; triumphs. The name is no mere psychological stigma: it is applied physically and stands for the hatred and con- : tempt of one man for another, who. he says, is not lit to kill. Years of anguish and infamy lie behind this ! action, born of rite mouotony and lone- ,' liness that come with the hush of the 1 white wild. The story is virile and vivid to a degree and is oac- that will be long romCrr.bcred. MANAKAU PICTURES. To-morrow- night a picture entertainment will lie given at Manakau, in aid of the fund fur providing a motor : cycle for the Y.M.C.A. organising secretary. The stiir film to be screened is , ii cowboy production, "Hell Koarin' Reform," featuring Tom Mix. The play deals with the evil spirits of Tarantula, a bandit-ridden town, whose outlaw residents oust the preacher, and j it |; Mix's task to shoot religion and righteousness into Hie place. The cowboy is said to do this with his customary dash and directness. Xumeroas , new-thrills are provided in this picture, ' which is declared to be the livest , western drama in which Tom Mix has appeared. Among other things he leaps , on horseback from the upper balcony ', of one building to the roof of another. "J plungiug through the roof with his I horse. He rides down a steep moun- ' j tain track tit a headlong gallop, routs I a band of stage-coach robbers by firing three guns at a time, and shoots a j man's pipe out' of his mouth. The picture should draw a packed . house, especially seeing the good object of the function.
