OBITUARY.

REI PAEEWHANAKE. On Saturday last there passed ami one of the very best known Natives <• the whole coast, in the person of Ec I'arcwhauake. Rei was a noted rang: tira of the NgatiraukawuS, who ha... lived practically all his life at Otak . and had attained the ri pot ago of a'bou 90 years. He was a .splendid type 01 the old Maori —honourable, straight living, dignified and courteous —and was held in the highest esteem not onl by his fellow-Maoris but among tho Europeans also. He was educated at Auckland in the very early days of the Native Mission work. Early in life he embraced Christianity, and for :. great many years right up to his death he was a most faithful worshipper and regular attendant at the local Native church services. He enjoyed goc:! health almost right up to the last, and j •was only laid reside a few days before his death. Deceased leaves a widow—Heni tc Kei, who has the honour of bein.. daughter of the late Tamihana Te Eiiuparaha. and granddaughter of the celebrated Te Eauparaha. Rei leaves » family of three sons—Sam Wilson. Martin and YVaari, and oae daughter, Pipi (commonly known as tiie "Dummy." she being deaf and dumb). ' The funeral will take place to-mor row afternoon, at the Native Mission cemetery. j PETER HAKARAIA. Peter Hakaraia. son of the lute j Hakaraia. to Wheua. and a member *'i the well-known Hakaraia family, died at Palmerston North on Saturday, aged lit years. For a time Peter was in tin Otaki Hospital, but recently was transferred to Palmerston North for an operation. He had been ailing for a long time past. Peter Hakaraia was the possessor of a most cxtraordinary voice, a pure soprano of very sweet rone. He was a member of the Rev Bennett's celebrated Maori choir ul Kotoiua. and in this district was heard to advantage many times in concerts: jj c was ~ nice-mannered, straightliving lad. liked by all who knew him.
