I The following details in connection I with the recently-formed Household [Orderlies’ Association nil! he rend with interest:— Applications for training as household orderlies will he received from women mide'r the nge of 28. Applicants must apply in their own handwriting, slating nge, previous schooling and experience, state of health, height find weight. They must, also name two referees who may be communicated with for a testimonial of character. They will enter the hostel as probationers and will have practical training in house, kitchen, laundry and if possible nursery work. On satisfying the staff that they are competent, employment will be found for them, such employment to be household work in any of the above branches, remunerated at n fair rate (average Is tin hour), and Inot to lie such us lo entail constant hard scrubbing or constant heavy ■ n-ashing, but some work in these branches will be expected. Work hours will be arranged by I agreement between employer and AssoD ciation. If the probationer i passes the efficiency tests, this £4 will 3 j go towards defraying hostel fees for | the next month after qualification; if I the probationer does not qualify thi ~ I deposit shall be held by the Association in lieu of board and lodging, j " 1-Tom the time she is qualified, the | i H.O. shall pay 25s a week board and j j lodging in monthly payments in ad--0 vance. | On qualifying, the 11.0. must sign a contract to live in the hostel and work with the Association for a minimum of six months. After that time she may leave the hostel and take the status of Associate H.O. To retain their privileges, associates must bemembers of the H.O. Club and subscribe to its rules. One of these rules will be that employers must be members of the Employers’ Guild. The object of the scheme is to make fair working conditions for domestic workers and their employers, together with a congenial community life for workers. The H.O. is expected to give willing service of a high standard, and in cvcrv way to raise the present status of household work. The H.O. will be on the same footing as any other independent worker, as e.g., a visiting governess, and the same sense of honour will be expected as is expected from the office clerk, e.g.. the H.O. must not talk about her era- | plover’s affairs or make public com- j jjent on tl;e conduct of the Household, j fcrhe must be punctual in her hours, and j keep absolutely to her w ; In any dispute between employer i and employee, the council will be the j .arbitrator, and every effort will be j made to put the H.O. ’s in. positions [ where they will be happy. The general conditions of the con:- I munity life of the hostel will be the t same as those obtaining in any modern hostel for women. The provisional council consists of the following:—President. Or.
