- FBEVENTION OF ACCIDENTS. f Tin; need for action in the direction. of the prevention of accidents through motor traffic «m discussed at tbo Horowhenua County Council on Satur- ' day last, when a letter was read from I the Manawatu County Council asking ! to be supported in a resolution with a view of taking combined action to introduce legislation which would give magistrates drastic, powers to deal with owners of motor vehicles who caused accidents on public highway*, and suggested all drivers be qualified. L. H. Arcus (Ohau) also wrote complaining of the excessive speed of motor cars driven past the Ohau school to the great danger of children. Rcj cently two very narrow escapes from t accident had been witnessed by him. j He suggested the Council put a raised I piece of road, similar to the work done |at Petone. Drivers of vehiclcri also j had a grievance against glaring headlight!* of tnotors. j Cr. Harkncss partially agreed with I Mr Arcus' letter, and said no notico I had been taken of a sign erected. How- ! ever , he did not agree with tho ' "hurdle" que-lion, and suggested ! motors should have governors which i would govern speed. Cr.' Ryder asked which waa best, for [ the driver io meet with a fatality or | kill some one else. Action should, hi j considered, be taken to prevent acei- ! dent-. It was resolved that the Maruiwatu | Council's letter receive attention end I that action be taken accordingly, also j that the matter at Ohau receive the i Coancil'n attention.
