ANNUAL MEETING. el The annual meeting of the above c . Association was held at the Druids' A Hall, Levin, on Saturday afternoon., ,„ when between twenty and thirty iuei'i- l bora were present. Mr S. A. BroadVxi:. T (president) occupied the chair, and in i„ his opening remarks said he was plena- jj cd to see such a number present, despite the-adjournment and the wot g, afternoon. b The report and balance-sheet were j read and adopted. Among the ma'-i „ items oi receipts were: Members' av.-- n scriptions £oOS Is Od, as against £l-1:3 « for 1918-19; entry fees £lßl, as agaii -' J £l2B ISs (id; gates £l4O lis 6d; tolai j t l £996 3s, against £573 ISs 2d last ye::. a Expenditure: Prize money £397-158, ;■.. j( against £506 15s; printing and static - : t . cry £7O 5s Id, wages and secretary '■ salary £llO, rent £25, erection pig p< ■• , \ £l-10 3s, judges' expenses £SO, inisc- 1- \ laneous expenses £52 15s lOd; balm: ■■• j. ut bank, £lB. 1 Assets: Yards, hurdles, etc., £SO; p.; v shed, £125. 1 The report was as follows: r"Your committee have pleasure in t ' iireseiiting to you the fourteenth a:t- (. uual report and balance-sheet, and in (_ doing so express 'their appreciation of ' the loyal support which has been nc- r corded the Association by all concern'- |. • ed. Last year your committee decided 1 t ito further the advancement of the As- s sociation by making its annual show a two-days' fixture. The result proved c .j to l>e most successful in every respeci x I in spite of liie fact that the weather t ■ conditions nurd against them for the , I i Jirst lime in the history of the Asso- , ' ' cJation. Comparing the previous year': j . rut lies (054) with those of last ye«i | f | iSii.i). together with Ihc increar- ■'■ I ' 1 revenue derived from tlie various 1 sources, it is easily seen that (he si-,. ; \ taken was in the right direction, am! ■is sufficient guarantee Cor the future 1 of tlif Association. Taking into ue j ( i-ouul the outlay on new pig pens am.: buildings, at a cost of £l5O, also the ; I amount of £25 extra rent which the . I Association was called upon to pay for 1 the previous year, together with in , | ■ creased cost of labour, printing, stti- ' 1 lionery, etc.. the result of the past ; ! rear's work must be considered most i : 'satisfactory. The Association lias re j i cently lost another of its prominent ; 'supporters in the death of the late Mr j R. D. Harkness, who was a keen com- ' 1 pet.itor, and one whose loss will be ' j greatly felt, and wo feci sure that his- ' family and relatives have the sym- \ [ pathy of the members generally in ' their sad bereavement. Your commit- - tee 'are coniideut that with the adi vancement this district is making, the i future of the Association is assured. i and it only requires the energetic sup- ' , port as in" the past to make it second -■ 1 to none of its size. Wishing you erery » i success in the future." The Chairman, in moving the adopItion of the report and balance-sheet, considered them very satisfactory, and stated that the venture of a two-days' ' show had proved very successful, and i no doubt as it was a pronounced suei cess had come to stay. Had the wea- ' ther proved more favourable the fttnetien would have proved even a greater I success. As it was. a big prolit was : shown, the attendance was larger, and ! taken all round the Association could"' j congratulate itself on its success. The motion was seconded by Mr K. V. Brown and carried amidst applause. £ ; Mr O. Tally said no doubt the AssoI ; eiation could congratulate itself, as it I i had made a prolit of, approximately, 8 , £l.ji). Ho expressed a strong wish that I I a one-day's show should not be reJ ; verted to. 4 *s*U 1 I The Chairman said that at the be--0 ! ginning of the year the members had J ; laid themselves out to make a suecess- | > ful show, and certainly did a lot of 1 useful work. The success of the show I , was due to such energy, and he hoped "I members this year would repeat the ■ ( ' performance. ■»• s\ Mr O. 11. Kiugdon asked if £l2 was .'( nil there was in outstanding members' ":| • fees, and on receiving an answer in the IS ' affirmative considered the stateratiut §1 very satisfactory. ■4| The secretary stated that of the SI amount a portion had since been paid. 'Jfi while there was hopes of others paying k\ their quota. §£§ i Mr R. V. Brown considered the ques--s?| tion of" wages a very reasonable item, I;! ' and said a deal had been said that as S| the result of a two-days' show this §U • item would It' large. j§| The Chairman agreed. I Mr Sigley drew attention to the item rS| of £3l 6s Od for lunches, and said it pi j represented 150 free lunches. If] ' The Chairman considered the exPl pense reasonable, especially as stewM ards. judges, committee, and others m { were entertained free of charge. rc> Mr B. V. Brown, in agreeing, said there" were not- enough free tickets disSSS tributed, and considered the Society a should be more generous, g Mr Tully agreed, and said that at & Carterton " exhibitors received hot §s coffee, etc.. at -I.So a.m., thc_ lireaMastj p and luncheon. 1 Mr Kingdon also considered the As- § sociation should be more generous. % Mr Sigley said he was not eomplaini in": he did not at first understand the §5 position. |j The election of officers was proeeedg ed with, and Mr W. H. Field, M.P., g was re-elected" patron. § In accepting the position of presidenr. Mr Tully returned thanks for the % honour, but stated that as he was a fe busv man he did not know how he was ~% to devote the necessary time for the if welfare of the Association. However, I he would do his best. (Applause.)
Prior to the election of vice-presi-dents. Mr Tully considered the aim of the Association should be to reduce, rather than increase, the number, but as they had such a splendid lot it was difficult to know howjo act. It meant if there we're too many vice-presidents taey could '-'role tae roost," while
some only attended meetings once a year. He considered it tie duty of such officers to attend committee meetings. He also considered the number on the general committee slieuld be curtailed to fourteen. Some committeemen, although good fellows, never even attended the annual meeting. Although not consistent, he would move that Messrs J. Kcbboll, Ben. Ling, AV. H. Sinicox, \V. J. Howell, AV. Tompsitt, J. McLeavey, J. H. Murray be re-elected. This >vas seconded by Mr J. Howell, and carried. Mr J. McLeavey considered the j general committee too unwieldy, there being over forty on last year’s list. The average attendance at meetings was about a dozen, and he moved tho number be reduced to fifteen. This was seconded by Mr Kingdom Mr Sigley proposed an amendment that the number be twenty-five. Finally, a compromise was arrived at, and it was decided that the number be twenty. The following were then elected: — Messrs F. Davies, S. A. Broadbclt, AVright, K. V. Brown, A. McLeavey, E. B. Lancaster, C. I. Harkness, It. L. Horn, C. H. Bould, K. Horrobin, AY. H. AVcggery, C. Duncurn, T. H. Colpman,, It. and K. A. McDonald, AA’aller, F. H. It. Gorringe, D. Brown, J. M. Broughton, J. Sigley; treasurer, Mr P. AA T . Goldsmith (re-elected); treasurer, Mr j G. H. l’yke (re-elected). I Mr Broadbelt, in vacating the chair for the new president, thanked members for their courtesy and considera- j tion extended him, and trusted the ; same would be given to Mr Tully. i Mr McLeavey moved a hearty vote of thanks to the retiring president, which was seconded by Mr Tully and carried with acclamation. The mover | referred to Mr Broadbelt’s excellent | services, and the care he had taken in i administering the affairs of the Society. Mr Broadbelt returned thanks, and j hoped the Society would do as well as ] it had done in the past. A letter was read from AValter Bull, secretary of the Horowlienua Racing Club, stating that in future any horse race of which a permit was controlled by the Horowlienua stewards, two stewards must be in attendance with the starter at the start of each race, and that this be a recommendation to the Horowlienua A. and P. Association. Mr Tully said the Association had passed a resolution fining AV. Bell (jockey) £;>, but the Racing Club had overruled! and considered a warning sufficient. He agreed that stewards | should bo with the starter. Mr McLeavey stated that if the Racing Club had agreed to the £5 penalty Bell would have appealed, won, and caused the club to be held up to ridicule. The members of tho club were practically unanimous tin the matter, and he hoped the matter had now ended. Mr L. AV. Fletcher wrote resigning as a member.—Accepted. The Board of Agriculture wrote stating that it intended to make careful and exhaustive enquiries as to new markets for produce, and welcomed suggestions. The secretary stated that owing to the postponement of the annual meeting the Association had been unrepresented at the conference. and thereferc had done nothing. The N.Z . Council of Agriculture wrote asking for names of delegates for the conference.—The secretary reported that tho conference) was over, but that he had mentioned the matter to Mr Broadbelt, then president. The letter was treated as received. The Dannevirke A. and P. Association wrote suggesting a conference of show secretaries to bring forward matters of material benefit to assoeiaitoils. —The secretary stated that owing to indisposition he had unable to l attend. The dates of the next annual show were discussed, it being decided to r hold a two-days’ fixture. It was sug--1 gested that Tuesday and AA'ednesday be ? the days, and thus moke the second day, which was on the half-holiday, s people’s day. It was pointed out. how- ’ ever, that stock-owners would not be 5 favourable to showing on a Tuesday t on account of being unable to prepare their stock by that day. e It was suggested that if the show i. was held on AA'ednesday and Thursday C the Otaki Town Board be asked to fall into line with the Levin Borough Couni- cil and declare a holiday on the second >, day. s It was finally agreed that the date s be left to the Chairman and Secretary. A vote of thanks proposed by Mr McLeavey. seconded by Mr Murray, n was accorded the auditor and treat surer. Mr Howell proposed a voie of thanks t- to the secretary, stating that a better '- man for the pbsitiou could not oe ours tained. (Applause.) Mr AA'allace, in returning thanks, d said he considered it time the Associas- tion thought of increasing the salary, y which was at present £SO a year. AVith the two days’ show instead of one. the it high cost of living, tho free use of his >t office, which the Association had alt, ways had rent free, and other items, the request was reasonable, s- yir Tully considered the matter one That could be left for tie executive a- committee, who would have a better ic grip of things. Mr Kingdoa agreed, bat Mr Hark- -- ness said he would like, to see it be a recommendation that an ine-rcsse be
granted. Mr Wallace had undoubtedly % worked hard, his duties had increased, and he had given his office, telephone, and lighting free of charge. Mr McLeavey thought the matter one that should be dealt with by the anaual meeting, and said no doubt Mr Wallace was doing double work than j when he first took up the secretary- j ship. He regretted tho Association was J not in a position to pay in accordance with his work. | Mr Harkness said all should be of , the opinion that the salary should be j increased, but thought the amount to be allotted could be left to the execu- - tive. He moved accordingly. The motion was seconded by Mr McLeavey and carried. — —— /
