A meeting of Manakau residents was held on Monday night to consider thi notice of motion to rescind the fol lowing resolutions, viz.:—(1) “That the cenotaph bo erected on the Toad in front of the, post office, with encroachment on railway, if possible, and (2) that the cenotaph be 'erected with additional base and fence as shown on Major Tatum’s plan.” There were some 25 persons present, Mr Howard Andrew occupying the chair, in the unavoidable absence of the chairman. Apologies were received from Messrs Sevan, E. P. Simcox, W. Dalzclh and Atkins. After the minutes of the previous meeting had been read by Mr C. Nees (secretary), the Chairman explained the object of the meeting and expressed a desire that some decision would be arrived at. Mr Swainson asked if the meeting was in order, and received an answer in the affirmative. Mr Falloon, in accordance with his notice of motion, then moved the resolutions as above mentioned, which was seconded by Mr Robert Bevan, andparried unanimously. -
carneu # 1 The Chairman pointed out that if the I cenotaph was to bo erected at the post office the base would not be so large as at first suggested, and after a short discussion, „ ~ , Mr Swainson moved, and Mr Bryant seconded, that the cenotaph be erected in front of the post office. 4 Mr Bcvan raised the question as to whether the Horowhenua County Council would grant permission, and was assured by Mr Bryant that there would be no objection, Mr Bcvan moved as an amendment that the cenotaph be erected in the school ground. This w T as seconded by Mr Clifford. Mr Burnell considered the school ground unsuitable; not only was it low, but the cenotaph was not a suitaje memorial to be erected there. On the other hand he favoured its erection at 1 the post office, where it would receive liiorc prominence. ...... Mr Miles raised the question that the xailW'uy line might be duplicated, which would mean interference with the monument, while Mr Clifford spoke m support of the school grounds. After a deal of discussion it was re solved, by twelve voles to ten, to erect the cenotaph in front of H»c post office. The chairman thanked all for their attendance, and expressed pleasure that the minority had decided to abide by the wish of the majority^^
